Mandarin Books is located in Hilo, on the island of Hawaii, commonly referred to as "the Big Island"
and also known as the "the Volcano Isle" or "the Orchid Isle." Aside from being the 2nd largest city in Hawaii , Hilo is
also on record as the rainiest city in the USA, with around 150 inches per year. However, in-between those tropical
rain showers you will find lots of sunshine, flowers and island flora.
Just indoors from our own "Old Hawaiian Garden", tucked away in Waiakea Uka,
the hills behind Hilo town, we take pride in offering our customers a consistent selection of rare and
collectable books, printed art and fine things of Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. The old books, the lovely
floral prints, the occasional 80-year-old tourist guide, are not just our merchandise, they are our passion.
The Online sale of our inventory, much of which is vintage,
some quite rare, has offered its own unique challenge. By presenting a thorough graphic display
and assessment of the physical characteristics of each item , we hope to enable you to responsibly
determine your interest in the particular piece and its value to you as a collector.
We enjoy making available both new and collectable floral and
scenic prints for display. With the assistance of one of our local frame shops,
we are able to offer many of the smaller prints to you professionally matted in
stock sizes. Generally, our printed art is sold in the ready to frame
configuration due to the increased shipping costs (3 to 4 times higher) involved
in transporting the heavier more fragile framed piece. Thus we allow you to choose
the frame at your leisure.
Our objective at Mandarin Books is not merely to process transactions,
but to care for your treasures after purchase just as though they were still our own.
Without exception, we wrap and pack our items with care in an effort to protect them
from even minor shipping damage. All of our larger, rolled prints are shipped in 3"
tubes that are further packed in the USPS pyramid shaped boxes. We believe that always,
the best way to assure that the postal service can do their job, is to provide them with
a clean, neatly addressed parcel that includes free Delivery Confirmation. Additionally
we encourage Postal Insurance on any of our shipped items. Please contact us directly
if you would like to arrange gift delivery or shipping to a foreign destination.
To our Hawaiian and Hawaiian-at-heart friends, near and far, Mahalo
for the opportunity to be of service to you. We look forward to providing an ever increasing array
of art and literary choices .
Recently we have been privileged to open a retail shop in downtown Hilo.
The configuration and store front display our items has proven to be both a formidable and rewarding
endeavor. For Island residents or visitors from afar, do stop by to enjoy a "hands-on" look at our
truly unique inventory.
Always, we are so very "Lucky we live in Hawaii," but for those not
so fortunate as to spend all 12 months of the year on our tropical island, Mandarin Books feels
privileged to offer a wide assortment of Internationally Shipable vintage and collectable books
and art so that you can deck your halls with the memories and the traditions of paradise,
throughout the year.
