"This publication celebrates the career of painter and printmaker Charles W. Bartlett (1860-1940) and provides the only complete catalogue raisonne of his known woodblock and intaglio prints which, in the past decade, have reached an international audience. It also includes a Bartlett-family memoir and an essay by Richard Miles, author of several books and many articles on Western artists who, like Bartlett, gained fame as printmakers working in Japan with the legendary Watanabe Print Shop." - The Publisher
A PRINTMAKER IN PARADISE: The art and Life of Charles W. Bartlett was compiled to accompany and commemorate an exhibition of his work, November 15, 2001 – January 6, 2002. Presented is an amazingly comprehensive collection of pieces too numerous to count, in color with titles and data such as where and who the painting depicts plus in a number of instances, the current owner of the original work.
Mr. Bartlett produced the legendary colored woodcut that was Duke Kahanamoku plus many other images that became so very well known during Hawaii’s earlier tourist years. Whether you previously knew yourself to be an admirer or not, likely you will see some very familiar scenes. As always, the Academy’s presentation of this remarkable artist is certain to impress and would be a wonderful addition to an Island library.
